The Signal SCV is a longtime Santa Clarita Valley local news outlet. 95Visual was brought in to diagnose and reverse a severe, multi-year SEO collapse tied to years of open guest posting on the site, which invited spammy content and toxic backlinks.
95Visual's assessment started with Google Search Console, where a Manual Actions notice was already flagging the account for a critical search-quality violation. A backlink audit quantified the damage - 226,065 backlinks across 32,899 referring domains, with an overall toxic score rated High. Two spam articles published directly on the site in 2021 had alone accumulated over 10,800 backlinks between them. Separately, 95Visual identified that the site's original domain had lost a seven-year-old redirect carrying real authority from sources like Wikipedia, the New York Times, and Forbes - recoverable simply by reinstating it.
Google's response was severe: new users dropped 96% year-over-year, with clicks and impressions each falling to roughly 6–7% of their prior-year levels. Google's manual action review flagged 135 individual pages for direct removal, spread across years of published content. A separate internal review scoped infrastructure risk - DNS, hosting, backups, plugin management, and subsite properties - framed around preventing future outages rather than just fixing the current problem.
